INSPIRATION SERIES: Meet The Ladies Who Are Bringing Wellness to The Modeling World

The fashion industry is known for creating unrealistic ideals and standards for beauty. It can also be punishing towards models and the expectations that fall upon their shoulders. It's safe to say that often, models must adapt unhealthy lifestyle habits in order to maintain "the right look" and continue to get hired. Enter Addison Gill and Madison Schill, the Founders of Mind Over Model. Mind Over Model is a website that promotes positive changes in the modeling industry and also provides tools and resources for models to live a vibrant and healthy life. By sharing their own personal stories, struggles and triumphs, Madison and Addison encourage models to move away from fear-based, unhealthy and drastic measures -  things like dieting and over-exercising and instead, move towards living a healthy, connected, balanced life.

Madison and Addison (who also have strikingly similar names!) definitely know what they're talking about when it comes to being a professional model. They've collectively worked for some of the industry's top brands including Valentino, Louis Vuitton, Oscar de la Renta, Lanvin, Marchesa and the list goes on. Their personal journeys have taken both of their careers into very interesting places off the catwalk as well. From working in the tech industry to studying Metaphysics, these #girlbosses are making their own rules by following their passions, staying true to themselves and creating their dream lives.

Get to know their healthy habits, fave beauty tips, current mantras and more in this week's Up Close and Personal.

NAME:

Addison Gill and Madison Schill

HOMETOWN:

Adds: Caledonia, Ontario

Mads: Oshawa, Ontario

I CURRENTLY LIVE IN:

Adds: Toronto!

Mads: Same. Just a few blocks away from Addie, actually.

WHAT I DO:

Adds: I work in tech! I do marketing for a creative digital agency. We're a small team of 15, so I do everything from writing content for our blog, to email campaigns, to hosting events and establishing partnerships. I'm also a fashion model here in Toronto with the same agency I've been signed with since I was 14.

Mads: I'm a writer and producer of content for several different outlets - sort of like a matchmaker or sounding board for various issues and causes within fashion. I'm also studying full-time at the University of Toronto, majoring in Metaphysics, French and Italian, though I'm dabbling in the Astronomy program this summer. I'm also an Associate Producer to an amazing documentary on diversity in fashion - it's called Straight/Curve.

ALARM GOES OFF AT:

Adds: Between 6:45 and 7:45. I'm not a morning person but luckily my team works 10-6 so relative to other offices it's not too bad!

Mads: It depends! Right now a great time for me is 7 am - I get to have time to make a nice breakfast and do some readings while replying to emails and having my coffee.

DAILY UNIFORM:

Adds: The only consistent , uniform-like piece would be my Apple watch. I keep my phone at the bottom of my purse, so I'd miss all my calls and texts without it.

Mads: Ugh! Addie knows exactly what this is - my Etre Cecile logo tees, a pair of slate grey Wilfred culottes and white lace up sneakers - sometimes a chunky heel, too, with my Moleskine notebook and a good pen.

I'M MOST PRODUCTIVE WHEN...

Adds: I've woken up about 20 minutes early to plan out and mentally prepare for the day ahead. This makes me feel in control, which allows me to be more productive.

Mads: When I wake up early (and the sun is shining!).

GO-TO QUICK BREAKFAST:

Adds: Maple sheep's milk yogurt with chia seeds, which I grab from my fridge before heading out the door. I almost always make a stop at the coffee shop across from my place for an americano too - I love me a really well-done coffee.

Mads: A mushroom/egg scramble with avocado and collard greens. Put anything inside them and make it a wrap - SO much fun and SO good. I'll make a pot of tea from Mariage Freres if I wake up early - if not, a traveller comes with me to campus.

FAVOURITE WORKOUT:

Adds: I've been running ever since I was on the cross-country team in grade 3, and it's always stuck with me. It's how I clear my mind, and I really appreciate the time to be alone and check in with myself. Because I run, I also do yoga to help stretch.

Mads: I'm really into boxing but my ritual is dancing, running or an athletic yoga practice. Growing up, my dance studio taught me how to self-condition, so I have exercises that I love doing on my own when I need them. I like to make everything fluid and fun.

POST-WORKOUT FUEL:

Adds: I'm the same as Madison...Hmm probably just what I'm planning for dinner that night!

Mads: Literally anything. I'm not too picky, though maybe I should be?!

BEST BOOK I EVER READ:

Adds: To Kill A Mockingbird is one of those mandatory high school novels that really made an impact on me and will always be special.

Mads: Omg. Okay. Since books are my life, I'll give a few: Rebecca by Daphne de Maurier, A Moveable Feast by Earnest Hemingway, and Grace by Grace Coddington. (Do I even need to say The Alchemist?)

I CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT:

Adds: Lip chap. I have one on me at all times and feel naked without it.

Mads: Belief in big things.

I DE-STRESS BY:

Adds: Cleaning. To me, my space is a tangible reflection of my current mental state. So when I'm overwhelmed if feels really good to clean up and re-organize, which brings back a lot of calm.

Mads: Going home to my parents house, sitting in the backyard, and realizing that life is truly, ultimately, great.

THE NEW HEALTHY HABIT I'M WORKING ON:

Adds: Having just one cup of coffee in the morning and switching to tea and water the rest of the day.

Mads: Dancing more often and drinking more water. Dance - check, and water, erm...it's a work in progress!

TOP 3 CLEAN BEAUTY PRODUCTS:

Adds: Sukin super greens detoxifying facial mask, Crawford Street Skincare sandelwood and bergamot body oil and Viva Organics amaze purifying and exfoliating gel.

Mads: Eminence Organics probiotic moisturizing mask, coconut oil (best oil cleanser everrrr) and BITE Beauty's lip exfoliating treatment. Also - anything by Province Apothecary, though I'm loving the quick-fix ease of their acne spot treatment.

SIMPLEST BEAUTY TIP WITH THE BIGGEST IMPACT:

Adds: Get moving and exercise the night or morning before you want to look extra awesome. There's something about working up a sweat before getting showered and ready that keeps your skin looking healthy and youthful.

Mads: Don't wear makeup all the time. Trust me. Less is more. If it's scary to even think about going barefaced into the world, understand your skin will thank you once you begin to trust it and love it as it is. Focus on enhancing not covering up - instead of contouring and creating harsh lines, buy a highlighter and blend in a few key areas instead - instant bang for your buck.

WHAT OR WHO INSPIRES ME?

Adds: Going to events with lots of people where everyone is in such a good mood and there's a collective euphoria and excitement. I just went to Bestival this weekend and Madison and I are both going to WayHome festival later this summer which I'm really looking forward to. I love the energy of everyone coming together!

Mads: Young people. I love talking to kids, teens, people who have dreams and passions and incredibly profound opinions on the world. They are gold to me. I want to spend as much time as possible making them feel like what they say, what they feel, has value. That's so fulfilling to me.

I STAY CREATIVE BY...

Adds: Making things in real life. I do so much work now that's solely done on the computer, but really find that my creativity comes back when I pick up some pencils to draw, or get out the scissors to create my own flower bouquets. Literally anything hands on, I'm in.

Mads: Looking after myself, seeing a moving film, reading or anything that will crack open my routine or habitual way of thinking. And then? Travel.

I FEEL MOST BEAUTIFUL WHEN...

Adds: I'm walking home from yoga class and I feel super zenned out.

Mads: Right before I'm about to create something or the moment when a beautiful idea is just about to come together into a real and actionable plan. I feel so capable and in control, like every atom in my body is alive.

MY CURRENT SPIRITUAL PRACTICE:

Adds: I think this is more Madison's space than mine. Everyone has a different level of spirituality that they like to dive into and mine's pretty surface level. The biggest thing that stands out for me is that I make the effort to practice gratefulness every day. It keeps me aligned and from getting stuck inside my own bubble.

Mads: I see an integrative healer every so often to align my chakras and keep my emotions in check (I know this sounds woo-woo but it's a huge source of stability in my life!). I also love pouring my soul on the floor when I dance, and giving my heart a space to vent when writing. If I'm not writing, I'm not myself. Generally, I just love trying new things, meeting new people and inviting them to be vulnerable with me. I always leave those kinds of encounters with such a heightened faith in humanity.

I'M MOST INTERESTED IN SUPPORTING CAUSES THAT...

Adds: Empower and educate young women.

Mads: Support humanity. Period.

TO ME, REAL BEAUTY MEANS:

Adds: Being genuine.

Mads: The outlook that we are enough.

MY CURRENT MANTRA:

Adds: Make it happen.

Mads: Do it.

MY ADVICE FOR SOMEONE GOING AFTER THEIR DREAMS:

Adds: Learn by doing. Don't wait or rely on someone to teach you. If you want to accomplish your dreams you're going to have to dive in yourself and make it happen. There's a lot you'll have to learn, but if it's actually important you'll do whatever it takes. Also, learn the tangible skills you need to make your dreams happen. Everyone loves big ideas but achieving your dreams comes down to being able to switch from high-level talk to actual execution.

Mads: There are probably twenty people in your life telling you right now to have a plan, think about your business model. focus on the bottom line and envision how to make a living. So I'm not going to say that. Instead, I'm going to ask you is what you're doing going to help others or yourself? Think about that and then, if you know this is an idea that needs to be put out into the world, run with it. Run and do not stop because this is your life and only you can make it meaningful.
